Accessible trails in the Columbia Gorge

Accessible trails in the Mount Hood area

Trail Index for Oregon's Columbia Gorge and Mount Hood Regions

For the purposes of our site, the area surrounding the North Cascade region of Oregon is split into two sections: accessible trails along Oregon's Columbia River Gorge Scenic Byway from Troutdale to Mosier, and accessible trails in the Mount Hood area directly south of the gorge accessed by Hwy 35 and Hwy 26.

Columbia Gorge

Columbia Gorge at Rowena - photo by Dennis FratesThe Historic Columbia River Highway was the first complete road built through the Columbia Gorge. Begun in 1913 and completed in 1922, the road linked Portland with The Dalles. The road was replaced by I-84 in the 1950s. Although some of the original highway was destroyed with the advent of the new freeway, dozens of fragments, representing nearly 50% of the original highway were abandoned or bypassed. ODOT has restored many of the bypassed segments for use as hiking/biking trails and several of them are accessible and covered here. Also see Oregon.gov and the Oregon Parks and Recreation Website.
